Freemium and Freeconomics
"I like to keep my posts short, so I'll end here with the observation that the Internet allows an entrrepreneur to enter a market with a free offering because the costs of doing so are not astronomical. And most entrpreneurs who take this approach will maintain an attractive free offering of their basic service forever. But that doesn't mean that everything they offer will be free. That's the whole point of freemium. Free gets you to a place where you can ask to get paid. But if you don't start with free on the Internet, most companies will never get paid."

Monetize The Audience, Not The Content
Fred Wilson thinks that web 2.0 (and beyond) can be monetized if you monetize the audience, not the content. I think he is forgetting that for over a decade now people online have been socialized to expect free content. If you want to monetize the new web you need to figure out how to break the free crack/content addiction that the public has (understandably) developed. The guy who figures this out will be the next Bill Gates and then some.

Why Comments Matter
Simply adding a comment thread at the end of a news story is a recipe for trouble. But it is only a recipe for trouble if that is as far as you go. An unattended comment thread will be full of garbage and many are. But if the author of the news story, or opinion piece, or blog post, tends to the comments, replies to the good ones, signals the bad ones, chastises the loudmouth bullies, and generally runs the comment threads like a serious discussion group, a serious discussion will result. It's an issue for the news industry because tending to comment threads is not part of a journalist's traditional job. But I would argue that it is now and they ought to get busy doing it. For one, the journalists that do it and do it well will be better read. And they'll be better informed. They'll get tips in the comment threads. They'll get constructive criticism that will help them do their job better. And they'll get leads on new stories before others will.

Areas Of Interest
A few days ago, I exchanged emails with a journalist friend. She said the following, "I'm just wondering which sectors/investment areas/types of start-ups you think will be exciting investments in 2010, and which you're staying away from because they're over-hyped, not yet ready, etc." Today I sent a friend in the VC business an email outlining some areas I wanted to focus on this year so we could find some things to work on together. In thinking about those two events, I decided I should just post the answers right here. So here goes:

A VC: 10 Ways To Be Your Own Boss
The folks at Behance and Cool Hunting asked me to talk at their 99% Conference a couple months ago. The 99% conference is aimed at creative professionals and is focused on Edison's "99% perspiration." And in the spirit of how to get your ideas to happen, they asked me to talk about entrepreneurship and the myriad ways you can "be your own boss." There are way more than 10 ways you can do that, but I only had twenty minutes so I focused on 10 of them. The point being that "You don't have to be Twitter or Foursquare to be your own boss and do what you're passionate about." Here's the talk.
